2011

Wow... another year and another... Kid? It was a big one.

I am up having fed little Daphne and hoping (praying, crossing my fingers, etc) that she will stay asleep... at least until 5am (it is 2:55am now... is that too much to ask?)

Looking back:

January - After a hellish December, I think I spent January giving myself pep talks and considering googling for a new job, whereas, you (Cooper) began using a few words. We were still agonizing about whether you were talking at all and then enough. Little did we know that in a year you wouldn't stop talking, but that is a ways off, this month we listened to your few words, watched you play with new toys and enjoyed the return of Franco! We had visits with friends and snuggled together.

February - You turned TWO!!! TWO!!! TWO??? Why is this going so fast, and that was almost a YEAR ago. It was a very special time, and made all the more special by Mickey Mouse playing a prominent role. You continued to be far more cool than any two year old I have ever known and with the passage of another year we just loved you more... which just keeps happening.

March - The brain trust continued to steer you in the right direction, and it was "mo" everything, but with manners, so "mo, tease." I finally found the video and went on a posting bonanza and showed off all your words (still but a fraction of your vocabulary now, but after 2 years of waiting, each word we heard was like gold for the ears... um, or something like that. You continued to be glued to my hip, you already knew your colors and some kicking karate moves. I found out I was pregnant with wee little Daphne - an unknown other than the little person making me feel like hell ALL the time and sapping almost all my energy, which of course is when you randomly woke up midway through the night needing attention... enter Steve. As the month ended you continued with new words and began to use the potty - what a rockstar!

April - In between feeling like I was going to puke/die/fall asleep at my desk and writing about feeling like I was going to puke/die/fall asleep at my desk I began to deal with the hardest part of being a parent of two - feeling like I was jipping you.. which is not that different from before, but now instead of feeling like I worked too much and was robbing you of mommy-Cooper time, I began to feel like this other little being was cramping our style. Too late, though, I already loved her, though she was still an unknown. I took lots of generally adorable pictures of you, and documented your awesomeness including one of the first holidays where you "got it" and rocked an Easter egg hunt like nobody's business. Other things you rocked like nobody's business - big boy underwear!

May - I spent most of this month working or complaining about working, despite telling people at work I was pregnant (hoping that information would lead to someone being like "you are working too hard - here take a nap and have some chocolate," which, sadly, did not happen). However we found time to go to a farm, go to the fountain and eat ice cream. You ran the hallways and became more of a little person - shedding any remnants of the baby you once were.

June - I continued to be emotional and hormonal, but we rocked it out at Navy Pier with Beka anyway - flying over Lake Michigan at 40+ miles per hour - cause you are just brave like that. I realized that you have (in my modest opinion) somewhat advanced abilities to write and draw and I am already planning on steering you towards a good state school for undergrad before you go to some Ivy League place for grad school in something brilliant (assuming your pro sports career doesn't work out). Daphne made another big screen appearance and we again started planning on moving (fortunately not to any of the first 3 places we looked at). Daddy got the short end of the stick on father's day, but since he gets you and your sibling without ever having to host you in his body, it seems a fair trade. My shots in the rear started this month and you boogied before bed doing a barnyard dance.

July - I worked on the fourth, but managed to make time for paranoia about Daphne's health. You worked on your stand up routine, and seeing Daphne on the big screen put my fears to rest. I ate half of Chicago and we packed up our lives (again) and I used my first real vacation from work - one whole week off - to move across town. Fortunately, I was pregnant and lazy, so we made Daddy (and the movers) do most of the work, and I mainly just hung out with you.

August - I saw the first Daphne smile and your sweet singing voice made me smile, too. I think pregnancy got to me a little bit this month - too many "maybes" - maybe this is wrong, maybe that is wrong - and too little sleep. As an added bonus, having Daphne in my belly led to making new, unexpected friends at work. Perhaps the only thing that kept me sane at work, while you and Daddy kept me going at home. Steve and I celebrated 3 years and marveled that we had done so much, still felt like we had so much more to accomplish and managed to love each other through it.

September - You began SCHOOL with MS. KATHY (who is GOD around these parts) and I cried a little inside, because time... too fast. You braved an injury and acquired a weird habit of covering your face with band aid facial hair. Even more awesome, when you don facial hair, you also talk with a rocking accent.

October - Vroom! Go Lightning! And lightning went... Trick or treating! And was the MOST polite trick or treater EVER! Daphne got bigger as did our to-do list. You moved into a big boy bed (though you moved back to the crib briefly for a bit, this was another seamless transition you sailed through). There was a lot of potty time and Daphne finally got a name... well, two, actually.

November - HAPPY BIRTHDAY LITTLE GIRL!!! We finally got to meet Daphne, and MY OH MY was she a beautiful surprise! A little girl! We snapped constant pictures with our cell phones and Cooper came to visit me in the hospital and got to meet his little sister for the first time. Little did we know, our world just changed AGAIN in a very huge way... actually, we had a pretty good idea what was happening, we just couldn't imagine all the specifics.

December - As people came to visit the princess, I made the rounds of local hospitals. It was horrible to be away from both of you guys, but you made it through with the help of great friends and family (and if I am honest, probably hardly (if at all) noticed my absence, you were in such good hands and having so much fun). We rolled into the holidays, sleepless nights, pajama days, and lots of compromise and audibles. Family came in to see Daphne's first Christmas and Cooper's first Christmas where Santa was an understood concept, and not something we were more excited for than him.

Despite the lack of sleep, I feel more rested in a sense this year. I am so at peace and relaxed right now, and I am enjoying soaking up every second with these two kids and Steve. I know how lucky we are to have our time together, and cannot imagine how people get by on less, but at the same time, I remember having to get by on waaaay less, which makes this all the more special.

Kiddos - I am so excited to see what happens in the next year.

The Outcome

Coop LOVED his new room. Slept til 8 this morning and has been a total rock star.

Daphne, apparently, prefers wakefulness to sleep regardless of how private her accommodations.

I haven't given up yet... I just haven't thought of the next great idea...

Stay tuned.

Desperation (or, The Princess and the Pea)

I know that the first 6 weeks of a baby's life are unpredictable and cannot be shaped. I cannot make Daphne sleep at night any more than I can... well, anything, really (cause when one is THIS sleep deprived, one cannot properly function in ANY way). I know that from week 0-6 almost all babies get increasingly more fussy as they shift into people instead of pod people and as we are approaching week 6 in just a few short days, perhaps I should just wait and see what happens...

BUT, I haven't gone to bed before 5am the last 2 days,

AND, there is one place in the house that Daphne consistently sleeps like a champ. In Cooper's room, in his old crib. Yes, the "plan" (hahahaha) was to have this be a "kidS" room once Daphne slept on a semi-normal schedule, but for now, the princess wakes up to most noises, and I wouldn't expect Cooper to tolerate her highness ALL NIGHT LONG (and I prefer one of the two of them to be well rested), thus they were not going to co-hab any time soon.

SO, we moved Cooper out to the front room, and being the superstar he is, he took this ADDITIONAL change with excitement and happiness and fell asleep quicker than usual. Where did this easy going kid come from... clearly, he does not take after his Mama in this way.

We are hoping that the little lady sleeps as well through the night on the nice schnazzy crib mattress as she does during the day.

Will report back...

Family

This year, Mamaw, Grandpa and Aunt Krishia (apparently camera shy) spent Christmas with us. It was fun to have family, extended and immediate, share the holiday with us.

Rushing into a holiday season after having a wee little one could have been overwhelming, but with the love in the house and the good times had by all, it was just perfect.

Christmas!!!

The Lead Up

Between Santa and Christmas, we saw Uncle Gary and Aunt Sharon and listened to some awesome music (courtesy of Cooper). Daphne enjoyed hanging out on her mat, courtesy of Beka.

Santa Baby

Despite being laden, excuse me, BLESSED with a baby that sleeps almost all day, and parties all night, we decided we were going to make it to Macys to see Santa NO MATTER WHAT, because there is also an almost 3 year old up in this house that TOTALLY GETS CHRISTMAS (at least the commercial aspects of it) this year, and was PUMPED.

When we got to Santa (after a short wait - go see Santa the week before Christmas during the week in the middle of the morning... no one else was there), Coop had NO problem standing in front of Santa and rattling off what he wanted ("Mack the truck, Lightning, Cars, Trucks... please") but when we asked him to sit on Santa's lap, he said "Santa no get Cooper." Which I can't really complain about that, I don't want random guys getting Cooper in general, so I plopped next to Santa and Cooper reluctantly agreed to sit with me NEXT to Santa (tradition? I hope not). Despite his reluctance, he was willing to smile and say "cheese" cause this kid, he knows how to ham it up for the camera.

Happy One Month Daffers!

Daphne,

Today you are ONE MONTH old!!! I would like to say that this milestone comes with you sleeping longer or something, but that is not the case. Instead, I can say that after one month with us, your cheeks have filled out completely, and we are finally seeing some of the chub distribution down on your thighs and it is absolutely delectable! You are starting to smile / laugh more, though I am still thinking such outbursts are more associated with gas than anything else. You are so friggin cute, and thank goodness, because you need that as your saving grace when you wake up every single time we finish rocking you to sleep and try to place you on a surface other than in our arms (such as the bassinet, the co-sleeper, the crib, the couch, the bed... anywhere). Unlike most newborns, you are not the deep sleeper despite noise kind, and you find the noises your brother makes far too entertaining to sleep through, yet - you NEED your sleep. When you get 2-3 hours of a nap in without waking up, you are a completely different baby than when you only steal a few minutes here and there between waking (despite our efforts to get you to nap longer). You are a WONDERFUL eater, and you are more than happy to gulp down 4-5 ounces at a time, or snack all day, or both.

We are learning you and figuring you out. With Cooper we could go along with what he wanted without giving it much thought. I probably had to hold him to get him to sleep too (in fact, your Dad remembers counting down from 300 after he fell asleep before trying to even move him), but it was easier to do because he was the only demanding little monster in our midst. Now, with you, you are forced to share time with him, and so it is more of a balancing act / magic act to get everyone what they want and need when they want and need it, but we are getting better.

You are really a delightful baby - constantly making adorable faces, and stretching in an inspiring way. You have your daddy completely wrapped around your tiny long fingers and I already feel like I have known you a lifetime, and we couldn't imagine our house without you in it. I love our nighttime rituals - me rocking you to sleep and you looking up at me with those giant eyes until they finally close and you grunt when you snuggle in deeper.

Happy one month! We love you!

- The fam.

3 Weeks and Then Some

I made it home. Finally. And, while still on meds, all is back to normal.

Ms. Daphne still has her days and nights confused, but I am still quite in love with being up with a newborn in the middle of the night (spend the night in the hospital 3 nights in a row, only to wake up to the nurse checking your vitals, and you will be quite happy to wake up to a sweet smelling, nuzzling, fuzzy headed Daphne). I missed my babies. Both of them. Cooper has become even more sweet in his constant adoration of his sister. He loves her. He loves looking at her, talking about her and helping with her. He does NOT love me looking at her, talking about her and taking care of her, but if we can combine that which he loves with that which he does not, it comes out ok.

Daphne is filling out quite a bit, and I am noticing that those "N" (newborn sized) diapers are actually fitting as a diaper should, which is an indicator that she will outgrow them in about 5 minutes. She still wears clothes in Newborn size, but sometimes they roll up over her ever-expanding belly.

She has a personality that we see more of every day. It is what we expected it to be for the most part - a more animated and vocal version of her brand new self. She is beautiful and hilarious, and I think despite things being somewhat rotten in the first few weeks of her life (at least for me), things are still, on the whole, really really wonderful. I highly recommend having both a Cooper and a Daphne around.

I Miss You

Coop and Daphne,

I miss you.

Love,
Your Mama

I have been in the hospital since Friday. I might get to go home tomorrow, if a lot of "ifs" go my way. I have some sort of awful infection that was NOT responding to medication, and is only now maybe starting to show signs of slowly responding to intravenous medication. IF I show marked improvement by tomorrow, and IF my insurance covers a SUPER pill (that costs a SUPER fortune but can replace this intravenous stuff) and IF both my attending doctor and the infectious disease specialist say I can go home, I will go home tomorrow. And I will be relieved. And I will be terrified. I am so scared that this will come back. That some form of this is lurking somewhere and as soon as I am healthy it will come back and get me and I will be torn from the three people I love during the time (the only time) I am supposed to get to be with them without interruption. Or worse. What if I am not completely better and somehow I get Steve sick. Or worse. One of the kids.

The doctor today kept telling me if I went home I would be fine and no one would get sick from me, but I never thought I would be able to get this sick right after giving birth and being home and holed up with a newborn for 2 weeks, and yet, here I am. The idea of my children, either of them, getting sick like I have been makes me dizzy. I can't live in that reality.

I can't believe I have missed 2 whole nights of Daphne. Going on 3. I spent every night for the first 6+ months of Coop's life with him, and how unfair that I miss any with her. I can't believe I spent three days (going on 4) not snuggling and playing. And all this is after spending the days leading up to being hospitalized having a raging fever and rotating between trying to just wait it out, and shuddering in bed knowing I couldn't wait it out.

Fortunately this place has free wi-fi. Fortunately we have family that will drop everything and come help. Fortunately we have health insurance, that, even with the outrageous out of pocket, is still better than nothing. Fortunately we are in a position this will not break us. Fortunately both kids are still well (minus Coop's perpetual and pre-existing cough).

But I don't feel very fortunate right now. Cause right now I feel too damn sorry for myself. Yes, I am still fortunate, I know, but I don't FEEL it, because I can't even be NEAR it.

The nurse came in this morning, right after I learned that there was no way I would go home today (which I knew given that I am still clearly sick, but wasn't prepared for nonetheless), and asked "How is the baby?" and I cried and I cried. Then I cried some more.

No matter how good of hands my babies are in, it breaks my heart to not have them with me.

Big Girl

Today was Daphne's almost two weeks check up. We took her in to make sure that she had gotten back up to her birth weight, and were told, once again, that she is quite perfect (and she had surpassed her birth weight - gaining 8 ounces in 7 days).

She continues to be quite the delight. Some of my favorite things about her:

1. Her Hair. Cooper didn't get his until he was one, and even then it was in this weird old man balding formation (adorable, mind you) and this girl has HAIR. It is whispy and dark, and I love to brush my fingers against the ends of it when she is sleeping and it is standing at a 90 degree angle to her head. Cooper also likes to give her kisses on her head and brush one adoring finger against her hair. Swoon.

2. Her noises. Steve jokes that Coop was born looking like swamp thing. Daphne was born SOUNDING like swamp thing, and continues to grunt and click (that is the only way to describe it... it is a clicking like a dolphin noise) to express her satisfaction, DISsatisfaction and the like.

3. Her Directness. When she is angry she is PISSED, and just as quickly, once you right whatever wrong is distressing her, she is happy again. She is so expressive, and I already know she will be my little spit fire where Cooper is my docile love bucket. I love each of their personalities so much, and yet they are already so different... AND YET, so ALIKE... I mean, when I look at her, I see him.

4. Her mouthiness. When she is hungry she will open her mouth like a reach around in a REALLY elaborate, neck straining way that I can hardly describe adequately, but is so friggin adorable. Trust me. It is ADORABLE.

5. Her Teeny Tiny Feet. As Cooper says "Mommy, look at her teeny tiny toes. They are so cute." Yes, Cooper, they are, and so are you.

6. Her Boost. When she is being held against my chest she will do this weird crawl thing where she kind of pushes off with her feet to scooch up a little higher and snuggle in.

7. Her eyes. She will stare up at me for hours (usually in the middle of the night, cause she is still a wee bit confused about night v. day), and I get a little lost.

8. ALL THE PINK! Ohmygosh I didn't think I would be QUITE such a sterotype, but I do really like buying the little girlie clothes...

9. Her Looooong toes. They are like fingers. It sounds weird, and perhaps it is, but they are so little, and yet so BIG, and that makes it cute.

10. Her Double Chin and Chicken Legs. It is like the baby chub has to fill up one part of her before it can move on to another. I LOVE how full her face is now, and cannot wait for those thighs to fill out, but for the time being, the chicken legs are a sweet reminder she still has a lot of growing up to do.

Return of the Main Man

Cooper has been a real trooper since Daphne came home. He loves on her, and says sweet things to her. When she gurgles he smiles and says "Daphne is saying I love you Cooper" which she clearly is. We haven't forgotten our sweet boy, nor could we ever. He has been slightly less prominent in pictures of late, but that is largely due to his mobility. However, I do have these shots - Cooper in his most radical new jammies from Mamaw and Grandpa Cox, and Coop and his Dad setting up and playing with his Lionel train (courtesy of Beka).

Sleeping Faces

Love the chubby cheeks!

(note - all of these pictures were taken during the day... you know, when Daphne sleeps.)

Stylish

We did not have any little girl clothes other than what she wore home... that has since changed.

First Visitors

Tuesday morning, after Daphne was born, she had a slew of visitors in the form of Grandparents.

The Swaddle to End All Swaddles

Miss Daphne has been a HUGE fan of good sleeping during the day and hourly wakefulness during the evenings. Ummm, less than fantastic when I cannot also switch my days to nights as I did when Coop was a wee babe, because Coop is not a wee babe, and we are quite fond of his sleeping during the nights, thus if I want to see him I must be awake during the days as well.

Well, yesterday, due to some family activities, our little lady was actually quite active and awake during the day, so I thought she might be ready to SLEEP during the night. Well, she was VERY ready to sleep at night, meaning she was OVER tired and DIFFICULT to get to sleep.

Enter Steve - my husband who rocks.

He took the little miss to the living room and put her in a swaddle to end all swaddles and rocked her to sleep so I could get a head start on the evening... and then I woke her up at 2:30am to eat, and then I woke her up again at 7:30am to eat... IT WAS AMAZING.

I started writing this yesterday... last night was not so impressive on the sleep front, but oh well... one night of solid sleeping was great. I cannot wait until we get the all clear to let her sleep without waking her to offer her food... I might have gotten 7 or 8 solid hours... I can't remember what that is like. 4 hours feels like 10 now!

BIG GIRL!!!! (Not really at all... she is quite tiny!)

MORE PHONE PICS!

More pictures... almost done...

Some random pics from around the house since her homecoming:

PHONE PICTURES (PART FOUR)

Cooper meeting his baby sister. He is such a good big brother. We are SO proud of both of our kiddos.
