Happy New Year!*
*A few days late
Oh, yes, a Merry Christmas, too!
Sigh…. It appears I am a day (or week.. or more) late, here, but, all things considered, that means I am doing better here than perhaps anywhere else…
So, since Doodle’s birthday….SO MUCH!
We flew to Chicago for Thanksgiving and met a new cousin. We managed through 3 more weeks of work and school and then headed to Dallas for a weekend, which ended up being shortened by a stomach virus (while the hotel we were at was very nice, it was lacking in accommodations for a family of 4 with one member projectile vomiting all night… they basically handed us some garbage bags, new bedding and wished us luck…).
We got home and played host for the next week to family while celebrating Christmas and enjoying all things not work or school.
The second week of our holiday was largely filled with playing with the vast number of new toys, and (re)decorating various rooms in the house… because, yeah, THIS is happening:
(Expected date of arrival: July 4, 2016)
This year has been wonderful and delightfully mature and predictable for us. Save the last few months when we(I) began growing this new family member, the year was devoted to routine and stability. My job, save a few nights and weekends, was predictable and steady – so much so that Steve could coach Cooper’s baseball team, and we managed to get all the (mandatory) things done on time and respectably. I found a 90% reliable cure for my troublesome insomnia – running many many miles at ungodly early hours. Steve jumped on the bandwagon and took up spinning (at almost equally ungodly hours), which still baffles many who knew him when. Cooper strengthened his love for all things school, and topped off his studiousness with glasses. Daphne became… just bigger, older, more everything, which didn’t seem possible. Cooper and Daphne are each other’s best friends and that is truly what I consider my greatest achievement thus far as a parent. They treat each other with such kindness and compassion (most of the time), and it gives me comfort to know that we have them on our team as we add a new member.
So, while it is late, I will continue tradition and do a yearly wrap up for 2015 – a year so unlike “us” in many ways – in its stability, predictability and maturity (at least on the surface).
January: I didn’t post much this month (any month?) but I recall January as being an EXPENSIVE month, including a trip to the urgent care, followed by a trip to an emergency room, including a steroid shot and strong pain relievers and a warning that it was “more than likely that [my] eardrum would burst.” Amazingly, it didn’t. More amazingly, I went to work the next day (having just started a new job), and managed to nod my way through the day, feigning comprehension, when really I could barely hear every third word through the ear infections…
February: Whoa, for the shortest month, we packed a lot in here… including Cooper’s 6th birthday. He had a rocking party, and just continued to grow in to the coolest kid EVER. I could (and did) write on and on about how proud I am to be his mom, and how amazing of a gift it is to watch him grow, but since this is a brief summary of things, I will just say, SO PROUD and SO AMAZING. I finished my first half marathon in February and learned that training runs and a race are NOT the same thing (especially when one trains in Houston (FLAT) and races in Austin (NOT FLAT). After wanting to die, then wanting to quit, I finished and felt elated. Funny to think it almost didn’t happen as the preceding night (like so many) had been full of vomit… I also think it was this month that a measles outbreak occurred at Disneyland, so, obviously…
March: WE WENT TO DISNEYLAND! And ohmygoodness was it ever the trip of a lifetime?!?! Yes, yes it was. Steve and I have foregone honeymoons, trips abroad, hell, even trips NOT abroad for the most part (with the rare exception of a few nights in Vegas or at the (local) beach with the kids) in our 7+ years of marriage. In part, because we are oh so very financially responsible, and also, because we were often broke. But if ever there was a reason to horde points and save money, MICKEY MOUSE IS IT! We had a ball and will always remember that trip. We are starting to save now to take the kids (all THREE) of them to Florida… when we can afford it… so, you know, when they turn 30. Cooper continued the celebration of him. Oh, and HAIRCUTS! And I said goodbye to a friend that had been with me longer than my kids or my husband.
April: April was back to the swing of things, until a death in the family reminded us all that things are always subject to change. Steve flew home to be with family, and I holed up here with the kids, having to just send my thoughts and prayers for his family in the pocket of his suitcase. Despite the sad circumstances, the kids and I made memories that I will cherish that weekend. And then baseball…. Oh baseball… In Texas they start taking sports seriously so EARLY. But Cooper did GREAT and it was so fun to sit in the bleachers and cheer him on.
May: May was crazy with hectic schedules filled with class parties and counting down the minutes until summer. I still find it somewhat disturbing that my job does not give me summers off, because I cannot break my association with summer to summer BREAK….
June: Luckily the rest of my crew DOES get summers off, so I am able to enjoy some later nights and easier mornings as the kids don’t have to be rushed out the door. In addition to enjoying the end of Cooper’s first year in Elementary School (and our break from Daphne’s weekly tuition bill…) we were able to enjoy a baseball game when the Sox came through Houston. We made a summer “to do” list and began to check things off.
July: In July, we enjoyed a visit from our FAVORITE GAK (great Aunt Krishia). We traveled to Dallas where we went back to Mideival Times, and also visited an indoor water park with some very good friends. Cooper lost a few teeth and we continued to check items off “the List”.
August: We finished checking all the items off the list (including a VERY hot trip, but VERY fun trip to Fiesta Texas), just in time for summer 2015 to be over. I cannot wait for the 2016 list (which will include an item for “Bring home new baby – EEK!”). And then it was back to school, including celebratory DQ. Cooper got glasses, fortunately AFTER he fell off the swings at the park in what will be a memory that will forever haunt my waking and sleeping thoughts.
September: Technically we celebrated 7 years in August, but I didn’t get around to posting about it until September (so unlike me, ahem). Thank goodness I found someone who loves my brand of crazy Oh, and I ran my SECOND half marathon (which is insane in that it was HOT even in Chicago, and training for this in Houston through the summer was … EXTRA HOT). In keeping with tradition, Daphne ended up at Texas Children’s with a bizarre case of strep… oh, and then she tested positive for the flu 2 days later. I stayed home with Daphne when she was sick (which, to be clear, is NOTEWORTHY. I did so without FREAKING OUT, or taking her to the office, or juggling a million things… there are perks to a non-firm job). I believe Daph started dance this month as well…
October: October was more of the same as would be expected for 2015 – more baseball and dance and everything… except on Halloween when I grabbed a certain test on a hunch at Target (said “hunch” being that I had polished off a bag of chips the night before) and our worlds rocked a little bit. You would think we would be prepared for this type of news by now, but the truth is, nothing prepares me for it… The end of October and early November were the few weeks where I was able to enjoy this pregnancy before the nausea came and crushed me…. As it continues to do.
November: November was BIRTHDAYS! And THANKSGIVING! And getting ants in our pants for a the upcoming 2 week break! The baseball season wrapped up and we returned to Chicago to visit as many of our friends and family there as we could. Ditto for Daphne with regards to how awesome she is and how proud I am to be her mom. She is also the best.
December: See above. OK – so that is lazy. December was filled with so much family and love and fun, that it was both wonderful and difficult (because I feel like crap ALL. THE. TIME.) Santa came and we played and slept and cuddled and ate. It was, indeed, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I look around at us and our home and our lives and at the end of 2015/beginning of 2016 all I feel is thankful. This year was one where it seemed we didn’t change much, but was in actuality the realization of a lot of personal growth and change. I am so fortunate to be married to someone who picks up the slack, when I leave it (and to be clear, there has been a LOT of slack to be picked up lately). I am so lucky that we have lived a disciplined, if crazy, life, because we can finally breathe in this life now and enjoy the things that we do have - there was a time when I felt like I was drowning while treading water. Being an adult is hard.
To a new year! With new adventures, even if they are just more of the same. You never know – just when we start to seem predictable, we may just shake it up!
