Catching Up

Hello, October - how quickly you arrived!

My inability to frequently update this blog has become so routine at this point, that I almost don't feel bad about it anymore.  ALMOST.  Because, despite there being legitimately NO TIME to maintain this habit, I very much wish I could, because I love that stories and pictures and memories have been captured somewhere so I can scroll back through years and be reminded.... but, alas, I shall waste no more time lamenting how little time there is to keep track of the time...

A certain 8th birthday is fast approaching, so before I write a happy birthday post to my girl, I have to catch the blog up on everything else...

Let's see - the big kids started school.  Fifth grade for Cooper, which seems insane, but also so totally right, because when I look at him now, I see a boy on the verge of middle school.  Sure, that comes with some pre-teen angsty-ness and a mouth that sometimes just won't stop talking (even when it would VERY much be in his best interest to shush), but it also means someone who can stay up late to watch the end of the football game and not lose his shi! the next day, and someone who actually has the interest and attention span to watch a whole football game and want to talk about it and learn more.  He is the most kind and gentle big brother (in one week, I think 4 different people stopped Steve to comment on how good Cooper is with younger kids).  We could seriously rent him out to people needing someone to tend to their little ones and we would make a FORTUNE, but then who would we call upon when we need someone to tend to Cal???  He remains top in his class and an avid reader.  He is self-assured without being arrogant.  He was brave enough to run for class treasurer - a position voted on by the student body (grades 3 through 5).  I honestly didn't know if he would win, but was so proud he was brave enough to even run.  And then he DID win, and I don't know if I have ever been happier for someone else to win something.  So add Student Council to Read, Deed, Run to Safety Patrol to Choir, and then the fact that he was selected (by the Principal) to serve on the Student Advisory Council, and it is just... crazy.  His is such a do-er.  He is a leader.  And he leads by being himself and it just... well... it just makes me proud.

A cute Cooper story... He was in a Student Council meeting (leading up to the elections - a "pre meeting") and the other assistant principal (not Steve) that manages Student Council was explaining that kids in grades 3 through 5 would vote on the officers.  When Cooper heard this, he threw his hands up then said "There goes my secret weapon."  When asked what he meant, he explained that he had lined his little sister up to go round up the second grade vote for him, which he thought might put him over the top, so he was quite bummed to learn that second grade wouldn't be voting (a fact that had been clearly communicated previously, but he had somehow missed).  When Steve asked Daph, she confirmed that Cooper had been enlisting her to "rock the vote."

And Daphne - she started second grade.  Still getting 50% of her instruction in Spanish, and still getting (in her opinion) laughable bilingual support at home (ok, in any sane person's opinion - my "Spanglish" that I try to practice with her is undoubtedly BAD).  She appears to be queen bee at school - quite happy among her peers, and has definitely established a few besties that I think will likely stay with her through elementary school.  She is in gymnastics still, and (like Cooper) is in piano, but also surprised us all a bit when she said she wanted to add rock climbing to her schedule.  We put her in the beginners class one day a week, and I was more than a little bit nervous dropping her off - clearly the youngest in a group with no kids she knows and coaches that seem like very nice young people, but omg the height of some of the walls she might climb... GULP!  But she rocked it, and loved it and walked with confidence into the rock climbing gym and walked out with blisters on her hands that she would proudly show off 2 hours later.  And then, about 10 weeks later, we got a note from the instructor that she is ready to move to the next level.  She is such a badass.  Seriously.  Both of my kids are just fearless in ways I still hope to someday be.  She is strong and she is sweet, and Cal will demand "one more NeeNee hug" every morning before she leaves for school.  She continues to have a strong sense of style, and is very precise on exactly where on her head I should place her ponytail each morning.

A cute Daphne Story:  While I would easily compare my two boys to Labrador puppies - both big, think they can still fit in your lap even when they have doubled (or more) in size, easily affectionate, eager to please and incredibly outgoing - I would definitely compare Daphne to a cat - she is fairly shy (at first), fickle, stubborn and withholds affection unless she thinks you have earned it, or she really needs it.  Which is why it has completely melted my heart this month as Steve has been out of town twice in a matter of weeks and Daphne has been missing him something crazy.  Steve almost never leaves.  Neither of us does, really, but of the two of us, I have had to travel for work at least once a year or so, if not slightly more.  Steve, being in education, has not only not really had cause to travel, but also is the one who is the constant in our house - takes them to school, drops them off, there with them all day.  Well, the first time Steve left (for an education conference for 2 nights), it was almost as if he had driven off with a piece of her heart.  She missed him - painfully, I think.  She asked about him, she counted the minutes til he returned, and she commented often how much she missed him.  It was sweet and in a way I wish Steve had been here to see it, because I think being the rock means that he often gets taken for granted by the kids (and, in honesty, by me, too, though I would like to think not as bad?)  But, anyway, watching her miss Steve reminded me of how I used to miss my Dad when he traveled, and it just sent me down this full circle train of thought.  It's funny, because the changes in technology have made people more accessible to each other... but only people who have cell phones.  I used to be able to use the landline when I was Daph's age, and I would  call my Dad's office number so I could hear his voice and leave him messages when he was traveling.  I am almost sad for Steve that he won't get those messages from Daph, because she can't just pick up a phone, and she doesn't know (or need to know) his office number, because all she needs to know is his cell, which he pretty much always answers...  Anyway - it was sweet, and I know she is currently counting down the minutes til he gets back from his second trip (to Chicago to visit family) tomorrow.

And Cal... He started (pre) school.  And WOW is it different dropping your third baby off at school as opposed to your first.  With Cooper there were TEARS and he screamed for me to not leave him.  Daph, too, though to a lesser extent.  With Cal, he was like "girl, bye!" and didn't even look back.  Sure, there were tears, but they were MINE, exclusively.  That kid was ready.  He only goes 2 days a week for partial days, and we have our AMAZING nanny the rest of the time, but he LOVES school.  He feels so big.  He loves his teachers and pretends to be his classmates on the regular ("NO!  I am NOT Calvin, I am Foster!")  I do have some nostalgia with his passing more milestones, but he is so ready that it just makes me mostly happy.  Our family is growing up, and it is good.  Cal loves to read, is downright giddy when his siblings return from their school days, and continues to be my shadow.  He is in a bit of a sleep regression and wants us to lay on his floor each night until he falls asleep.  We did this with each kid, but my body makes more noise now when I try to sneak out of the room then it did when Daph was littler (quite a bit more than when Coop was little).  He is fighting off a virus right now, and with Steve out of town, I was on all day Calvin duty (praise for the big kids who not only entertained themselves most of the day, but also helped without complaint whenever I needed it).  He crawled in my lap and fell asleep... in the middle of the day, unprompted.  When he woke up, he tried to go upstairs to play, made it to the bottom of the stairs, then ran back into my lap where he fell asleep again.  I felt so awful for him, but even when my arm fell asleep, having been pinned in the LEAST comfortable position when Cal flopped one final time from his restlessness before falling into a coma-like sleep, I soaked it up.  My baby doesn't sleep in my arms anymore, and while I prefer him healthy, I try to absorb these moments before they are gone.  He randomly busts out in song (Arabian Nights from Aladdin) and constantly makes me laugh.

A funny Cal story:  Halloween is coming up and Coop talked Cal into being a football player with him.  Now, I support the sacred holiday of Halloween, but I am NOT about to drop money to get the kids new jerseys for Halloween, so we are lucky we have a jersey for each of them already.  Cooper will be a Chicago Bear and Cal will be a Cowboy.  We did a costume preview last weekend, so I got the jersey out for Cal, put it on him and asked him who he was.  He proudly responded "I'm Tony Roni and I am a baseball player!"  Not even close, kid.  Not.  Even.  Close.

(Daphne will be Hermione Granger ;) )

Summer 2019 Wrap Up

Well, in my defense, it still VERY much feels like Summer here in Houston.

And, as for Summer 2019, what can I say???  WE DID IT ALL!

Tracking the To Do List...

1) We made 10 things on the grill... (1) hot dogs on June 2; (2) fajitas on June 7; (3) shrimp on June 9; (4) burgers on June 16; (5) steak on June 30; (6) steak and hot dogs on July 5; (7) beef tips and veggies on July 16; (8) hot dogs on July 17; (9) pizza on July 26; (10) chicken on July 26

2) We went on at least 5 bike rides.... June 1, June 2, June 18, July 16, July 23 (with roller skating bonus)

3) We went horseback riding - July 5 (in Fort Worth, when visiting Mamaw and Grandpa, and Cooper was able to bring his horse to a trot in an open field)

4) We saw the live action Aladdin on June 8

5) We saw the live action Lion King on July 26

6)  We saw Toy Story 4 on June 27

7)  We went to the swimming pool at least 5 times (and thankfully did this early in the summer, as a plane crashed into our neighborhood pool part way through...) June 2, June 8, June 16, June 21, July 4-8 (at Mamaw and Grandpa's house), July 11, July 12

8)  We had an EPIC lemonade stand on July 16 - complete with comic strips for sale - definitely a hit

9)  We made an EPIC birthday cake for Cal on July 5-6 - complete with fondant roads and construction vehicles

10) We went on a road trip... To Sundown for Aunt Krishia the Great's retirement party (May 22-24) and to Fort Worth for a long weekend with indoor waterpark at the end (July 4-9).  Also, OMG, I got SUPER sick on that drive home from Sundown... I will forever remember crying in the driver's seat and stopping to dry heave in an Exxon parking lot....

11) We went on a walk to get ice cream 3 times... though on the first trip (June 22) we learned the ice cream place up the street had closed, so got cookies instead.  The next two trips (July 13, August 10), we did get ice cream because we walked to the gas station and got Dibbs... we are flexible like that!

12)  We had a family game of tag football on June 15..... in the rain in the church parking lot while Cal scooted in and out on his bike.  This was the MOST fun.  Mom and Daph vs Dad and Coop.  Each team one a game, but the girls took it home with a win in the tie breaker.

13)  We had a family basketball game on July 13.  We played several games and switched up the teams... I believe I came out on the losing side every time.  :(

14)  We made pickles on June 23.  They were SO good.

15)  We had a water war on July 13 and the parents DEFINITELY won that!

16)  We played at the park at least 5 times - always going early enough to avoid the hottest part of the day.  May 25, June 2,  June 4, June 16, June 18, July 10... and then we stopped writing it down....

17)  We made vanilla bean ice cream on June 2 (and made many other homemade ice creams throughout the summer....)

18)  We went to Willy Burger 3 times, feeling slightly too full after each visit, because it is THAT good (June 8, July 11, July 27).  It is the one place all kids agree on.

19)  We planted green beans on August 10, and all three kids have sprouted plants... I think we are a few weeks away from seeing bean pods, but I have hope that we can keep them alive!!!

20)  We made homemade doughnuts on June 9.  After the first batch, I remembered that you have to use smaller biscuits to avoid burnt outsides and/or gooey insides.

I have pictures of most if not all of the above, and I have hopes that one day I will go back and include them, but for now, I am glad to have this documented so that I can report on some other post-summer big events!

Happy Birthday, Calvin

Well, we just got back from a short little trip to Mamaw and Grandpa Cox’s house, with a short swing through Great Wolf Lodge, and so this letter is coming at you a bit belated.  Forgive me.
Our baby has turned 3, which means, technically speaking, I should DEFINITELY be referring to him as a baby no longer.  And yet, I still do.  Because he is the baby, but he is also so definitely not a baby any more.  As a full blown toddler he is out of diapers now (except for sleeps) and (kind of) has the whole potty training thing down (when he does have an accident you can tell right away because he will put a finger to his mouth and shush you, like we should ALL keep it a secret).  He has his own Kindle now, which he proved he could command (kind of) masterfully for a full 4 hour drive.  He is no longer contained by the baby gates we put up around the house (thank you Daphne for teaching him that one of the gates has a… gate, thereby weakening the entire defense system).  He speaks excitedly about going to school next year – just like the big kids.  He shouts up at the big kids to come down and play with him when they have forgotten that to do so is their sole purpose in (his) life, and he will find poor Clementine and scoop her right up into his arms while walking around declaring that he “found his kitty cat” no longer needing a big kid to wrangle her or place her in his lap.

Yeah – he is a bit terrifying.

He just got his third haircut, and immediately looks older.  This time, he practically climbed into the chair by himself and didn’t need me to stand arm’s reach of him the whole time (though I did), for he is a BIG BOY now.

Cal has appropriated everything in the house.  The Transformer collection that Cooper amassed over the last 6 or so years…. “These are Calvin’s”.  Daphne’s barbie house… “These are Calvin’s”.  In Calvin’s world, if he claims it, it is his.  Generally the big kids are pretty good natured about this, as they have more than enough toys, and don’t mind sharing anything for the duration of Cal’s toddler-sized attention span, but every now and then Cal finds himself in some trouble.  Thus, recently, Cal experienced his first  time out.  It wasn’t pretty, and was an agonizing 2 minutes for me (I was the one instituting the punishment while Steve stifled his laughter from the game room), but to Cal’s credit, as soon as his torturous time out was up, he hopped out of the rocking chair and immediately made the required apologies, thus proving each child is different as Cooper hardly required any punishments until later in life (and still, hardly any), and if I had made an apology a condition of Daphne’s release from time out when she was a toddler (and actually stuck with it), Daphne would still be locked in a starting contest with me, arms fully crossed, waiting for me to break first.  (Daphne has grown in to a very good apologizer, but LORD when she was little she was STUBBORN about waiting to deliver any apologies on her terms).

All in all, Cal is a pretty easy kid and a truly amazing, delightful, fun, loving, hilarious little spirit.

He loves his routine, and sleeps like a champ.  He has, for the most part, given up his naps, which makes him a happy camper and super ready to head up for a bubble bath before 7PM most nights.  After bath, he likes to race one of us down the hall to his bedroom with his hooded towel trailing behind him like a cape.  He is a passionate reader, and listens attentively to three books before listening to a few songs (including quite the dance number to “Under the Sea” aka “The Crabby Song” before he cuddles up in our laps).  If he doesn’t nap, he is out cold in just a few minutes.  If he does nap, we start the routine later, and he will spend a good half hour perfecting his gymnastics routine before finally giving in to sleep.  He is out cold for a solid 12 hours before he wakes up happy as a clam and just thrilled to start another day.  He is an avid fan of Marvel superheroes, he can spend hours playing with cars or trains either alone or with us, and (just like his siblings) he loves to draw.  He will spontaneously tell us he loves us, he gives out hugs freely and offers kisses regularly.

He is happiness personified in a just over 3 foot tall body.

In closing, Happy Birthday, Cal.  We all love you so much.  You are a total riot, and I cannot wait to see you go from 3 to 4.

May 2019

The month of May seemed to fly by.  It included...

a date night out for me and Steve

A visit from Mamaw and Grandpa Cox

Hysterics with clay...

LOTS of outdoor time...

Seriously, we SOAKED UP the month of May.  We knew it was the end of remotely tolerable weather in Houston...

I got an amazing pedicure...

And manicure...

A spa in my very own living room...

Daph was promoted from first grade - being one of only 2 kids in her whole class to be an all A honor roll kid (keep in mind, she gets 50% of her instruction in Spanish... a language that is NOT spoken (other than in a very butchered Spanglish) by either of her parents).  This kid, she is brilliant.

We celebrated by taking the rest of the day off and checking out the lounge at my office (where I schooled her in ping pong).

Cooper also was honored and promoted from Fourth grade, being the ONLY kid in his class to be all A honor roll average.  He continues to amaze and impress us.

And Cal... well, Cal decided to wear his swimsuit over his pajamas at bedtime...

And then continued to insist on exclusively wearing swimwear for about a week.

The Bigs and I went to celebrate the retirement of Aunt Krishia the Great.

It was awesome to be there and be a part of celebrating an impressive career.  We love her and cannot wait for her to live closer.

But we didn't let travel interfere with tradition, and managed to get our Summer To Do List drafted while on the road and decorated at the hotel.

And now for some Cal pictures:

And FINALLY!!!! In great and wonderful news, Daph dropped the training wheels.  She probably could have done this last year, but we just didn't get as much practice in, and I think it was more of a struggle with Cal last summer... who knows.  In any event, she is a full on bike rider now, and it is AWESOME!

Joining the ranks of this dude:

Cal is pretty sure he is riding a bike JUST LIKE Cooper and Daphne... even though he needs me or Steve to push him in order to move it (what is it with kids and pedals?  or at least MY kids and pedaling...  I don't think any of them figured out pedaling until WAY past toddlerdome...)

April 2019 - Where We Last Left Off

Before we can get to the summer, we have to finish off the school year!  So, in short order...

We start with just a collection of random Cal pictures.  He is by far the most photographed child in our family at the moment (courtesy, in part, of Ms. Cathy who fills his days with fun and send us little moments when we are at work, and also courtesy of our Bigs finding photographs way less cool now).

But fear not, the Bigs were around, too.  And even allowed us to capture some of those moments as well:

Daphne continues to amaze us with her ability to do the splits! (But refuses to stand for a picture, even during an award ceremony!)

Cooper did a service project - making treats for the local firehouse - and completed another year of Read-Deed-Run.

We are super proud of him for sticking with this club and completing the 26 miles, 26 hours of community service and 2600 pages of reading.  He will likely be the only kid at his school to do so for all 3 years he is eligible to participate.
His artwork was also selected for presentation at the district.
 We love this kid.

In fact, we were so proud of all three of our kids 3rd grading period, we treated them to some celebratory Legos:

Now for some other special events we crammed into April...

Leading up to Easter weekend, we got out Easter egg dye on:

Then we set off for Sea World on Good Friday - thinking we were brilliant as not everyone has the day off, assuming it was bound to be better than going on a weekend.

Look how excited we were!!!

Then, not even 20 miles from home, all of the highway was shut down due to a wreck with HazMat issues.  Our kids got to experience playing in the street as we parked in what had once been a highway and was suddenly a parking lot and played Mother May I on the side of the road.

Several hours later, I tapped out and tagged Steve in to child entertainment.

Sea World was HOT.
We managed the epic show with the Killer Whales, which was pretty fantastic.

We did some walking around, checking out animals, and the Bigs and Steve went on a pretty cool water ride while Cal and I ate popcorn.

But it wasn't long before we just wanted to cool down, and despite spending more time in the car than at the actual park, we were ready to head on home.

I am glad we went, but in no hurry to go back.

Then, before you know it, we were celebrating Easter.

Other big events from this month - MOVIES!

Thanks to a VERY thoughtful wife, Steve (and Coop) got to go to see Avengers End Game the night before it officially opened.  It was a special treat on a school night, but so memorable (and such a great movie!)

Though, I got to be honest, our at home screening of the first Harry Potter movie (Daph and I just finished book 1, and Cooper is a big enough fan to re-watch the movies with us) was equally epic in my book.
