Happy 4th Birthday

Cooper,

You were born, I blinked, and when I opened my eyes again, it was today. Your fourth birthday.

At least that is how it feels.

My heart aches to think that 4 years have already come and gone, because every single second of those years are seconds I will never experience again, and even though I don't want to start over because that would delay getting to see what comes next, it's hard to believe that they have come and gone so quickly.

My heart explodes to think that 4 years together has led to this.

And by "this" I mean you. You are perfection in a (roughly) 3 foot tall package.

This year, like every other year, has been a year of change. Not so much with the things around you (for the first time in your life, you will have spent more than 12 months in a single residence... though that, too, shall soon come to an end), but with you. You went from being my baby-turned-toddler-turned-little-boy to my baby-turned-toddler-turned-little-boy AND my best little amigo. So much less of our time is spent with me directing, corralling or correcting, and so much more of our time is spent talking and sharing ideas and goofing around. I, a person who gets little to no time by myself, actually chose to put you in the car with me for a 3 hour drive to go look at houses this past year. That's right. I chose to pack extra, make extra stops in a one day trip, get you in and out of the car some 10 or so times, etc etc, because I preferred the pleasure of your company to the quiet of my own. And I have always been a gal who didn't mind being alone - that is when I do my best signing in the car. But with you, I can still sing in the car, we just rock a duet, and it sounds so much better. This is the biggest shift that I noticed. Where I have always wanted to spend as much time with you as I can, this year was the first year where it felt like all up-side, where I didn't even hesitate for a moment to think about the extra hassle of packing for two, or planning for two. It now goes without saying, where I go, you are always welcome (and thus, you are always nearby, for I am to you what you are to me, we are besties for life and can't stand to be apart). This has expanded to you getting a later bedtime (so long as you nap, because without nap, you are a disaster by 7), and your dad and I are really enjoying our extra hour with you, without your shorter sidekick.

You have blossomed into quite the little scholar - going to (pre) school and coming home with ideas and knowledge. I am happy to see that school hasn't changed your personality, but has just filled your mind with ideas and your social circle with a few more faces. I was worried that you were almost "too" verbal and "too" sweet, and that you would go to (pre) school and it would chew you up and spit you out. Clearly, I am a little irrational and lack perspective when it comes to you, but I have seen other 3 and 4 year old boys, and they don't say "but that is not nice" when other people do something that hurts their feelings. They scream/kick/hit/bite or do something mean back. At least in my head / worst nightmare. There are a few of the rougher tougher guys in your class, but you don't mind. You tell me that they are "sometimes a little wild and rough, but we still like them, though." I think that is very open minded of you.

You are obsessed with trains and cars (still), you like to be gross and you are adamant that there is no way that anyone (me, your dad, Daphne) loves you more than you love them. I let you believe that it is a tie, but my sweetest little boy, trust me when I say, you are so incredibly wrong. Without being able to prove it in any way, other than just knowing it down to my toes - take however much love you have, multiply it by a billion, add a trillion, and then put that to the infinity power, and that, my friend, only begins to describe it.

You are forever my little reminder of what is important.

I love you. Happy fourth birthday.

Bike

Guess who, at the ripe old age of 3 years and 361 days (he would correct you if you called him 4 this past weekend, when said bike was received... he was still "three, almost four") is old enough and BIG enough to ride a BRAND NEW BIKE???

That's right... Cooper.

Though Daphne didn't quite get that memo, and was pretty sure the bike was for her - thus requiring an intervention...

Then we realized we had a more Daphne-sized "bike" and she was able to ride, too.

I can't wait for many WARM afternoons and evenings with these two... but wait I will have to do, because Chicago in February is still a little chilly for bike riding... but I think we will be braving the cold as much as possible over the next few months, because Coop is pretty pumped about his new wheels.

Birthday Party

Cooper had his 4 year old birthday party this weekend. I think this is probably the last year we will have a family only party, and we will be biting the bullet next year and renting out a "zone" or "land" of some kind for a gaggle of pre-schoolers, but that didn't mean we couldn't decorate and theme up the party for family.

Any guesses what the theme was???

SHOCKING! THOMAS!!!!

We had my parents, Steve's parents, Aunt Rose, Dawn, Aunt Allison and Aubrey, and Cooper was spoiled rotten and completely in overdrive with all the treats/attention/presents/love.

Coop was really a trooper, especially since it seemed Daphne really understood what was going on, and seemed to remember that presents = opening and eating buffet style in the living room = easy to grab cake.

Today is... the last day Cooper will be three (CRYING OVER HERE!!!).

I cannot believe it.

Fifteen Months

Hello, Daphne. The biggest difference between the you of today and the you of 3 months ago... your speed. While initially your walking handicapped your ability to beat me from point A to point B, being, at first, both slow and clumsy, you are now quite surefooted and speedy and I'll be darned if I don't have to watch you at ALL TIMES with BOTH EYES, because you can really move... directly to somewhere you shouldn't be. You find this newfound freedom / talent to be hilarious.

The next biggest change.... your feelings towards your brother. You ADORE him. You think he is HILARIOUS. You want to give him HUGS and KISSES.

He is slightly less enthusiastic about you, but you know he is almost 4, so he has to play it cool now, so don't take it too personal.

You are more expressive, which I used to think was not possible, but know better now, because apparently you CAN be louder... and more lovable, and more squeezable and more snuggle-able. You practically DEMAND that we let you wear your shoes everywhere regardless of what you are wearing / doing, and just recently I came home and found you in no pants, just a onesie and socks and shoes. You seemed quite proud of yourself.

You have a few more words- you can say car ("cah"), ball ("bah"), mommy, daddy ("DAH-EEE!!!), pa-pa, blueberry ("bo-ba"), hi and yeah. I think you have more words, but sometimes it is hard to decipher them, because they are usually said at a volume that renders hearing useless as my ears are ringing for hours thereafter. You and I have become more inseparable, and I find it hard to leave any room without taking you with me (by choice or by force), and I am kind of loving it. You love your Daddy something fierce, but unlike me, he is allowed to leave the room, without you having a total collapse... with him you just yell "DAH-EEE!!!" until he comes back. You are so the complete opposite of your brother at this age. Not in a bad way. Where he was quiet and agreeable, you are uncontainable and opinionated. As much as I worry about the challenges BOTH of my kids will face growing up in this world, I am so incredibly thankful that my daughter got this personality. For I think you, my dear lady, shall kick this world's ass.

You are absolutely beautiful and the strength in your personality is counterbalanced by the sweetest loving nature. You will came right up to us and fall into hugs.

For the first time in a long time, maybe ever, you fell asleep in the car today. I honestly cannot remember a time you ever did this before, and if you did do it, I am quite certain it was both short lived and followed or preceded by extreme screaming and crying (those early days were rough). You're mobile now. You're eating adult food now. You only nap once a day, and at the same time as when Cooper naps. I both couldn't wait to get here, and am somewhat heartbroken that we already made it here. You are/were my baby, but you really aren't a baby anymore. Even moreso than with Cooper, you are quick to outgrow the baby things. You are a second child, thus a "me too-er" - anything he can do, you can do better (or at least you think so).

I am not sure I can keep up, sometimes. I am not sure anyone can keep up, my sweet little potato. My goal is to just stay close enough that I can watch you every step.

Little Loves

Despite the new technicolor shoes...

Valentines day turned out to be a bust. At least ACTUAL Valentines Day. We did manage to celebrate with the kids, giving them their little valentines (a Salty that goes by himself and M&Ms) and telling them how much we love them... from afar. At least that is what I did, as I didn't want to infect them with the horrible illness that overtook my body beginning on Wednesday night... But what is a holiday in house without some dry heaving???

Fortunately, I was able to stay home for a few days to recover. Cooper would come to the room and tell me "Mommy, be sure to get lots of good rest, so you don't throw out again."

In other news, Steve took Coop out for a while recently, which meant I got to teach Daphne how to color (Your welcome Steve!)

Daphne really doesn't believe in "supervision."

She is her own person.
She is her own diva, rockstar, American Idol.

And cheering section.

Try to keep up.

So where were the guys all this time???

Getting a haircut. A haircut that turned my three year old into a four year old (or older?) looking kid. Haircuts keep doing this, and yet we keep getting them.

Probably because he looks so darn handsome.

Not to be outdone...

(Also, in case you didn't know, for full pigtail enjoyment, if you click on the pictures they open up to be the full size photo... for some reason, when they load onto this, they load into a cropped version...)

Girl Time au Natural

Though not apparent in these photos (a girl has to have SOME secrets!), Daphne can now take off her own diaper. Thus making this photo session extra speedy as I didn't want to risk the carpet... Or my lap.

There's No Business . . .

Like snow business...

Here we are at the end of January (because we are going back in time to when these pictures happened), experiencing our first legitimate snow of the season. Sure there have been a few flakes here and there, but nothing worth jumping in your snow pants for. Until now (then).

Yes, I did take that baby out without glove or a hat. You would have, too, if you had taken a good 15 minutes to squish her into a snowsuit and wrangle boots on her feet, and she immediately, once dressed, began trying to get undressed. Thus, we went outside so I could hold her and distract her by reaching out and gently touching the snow on the bushes...

Which lasted about 2 seconds before she wanted to GET DOWN NOW! and touch ALL THE SNOW!

We were just waiting on Steve to gather the remaining snow gear and meet us outside to suit up and go to the park for some sledding, but it seemed he was taking FOREVER, so I had to pick her up, dry her hands, and haul her to the garage where I could distract her with short sled rides...

Cooper found the whole ordeal rather amusing. Me uttering under my breath "where IS he????" and Daphne trying to launch herself into the snow again.

Finally reinforcements arrived. With a hat...

And gloves...

She refused to wear any sort of jacket, so we had a nice (quick) little stroll to the park with me using my jacket to cover us both to watch the men go sledding, which Coop did once and then promptly decided he did not want to do again... he got snow on his face.

Understandable. (They are the sled in the middle). At that point, it was time to go home and warm up, anyways!
