Dance Party

The tradition of the "dance party" dates back quite a ways. Back when we would have breakfast for dinner, push the furniture to the side of the room and dance while my Dad was out of town. I am carrying the tradition on. So much so, that it is almost a nightly routine. We put the TV on the Pop Hits Channel and get ready...

And then we dance.

Daphne will demand it now. She will stand by the TV and make a little whine. Walk over to the remote and whine some more.

Cooper has always been a dance party enthusiast. Even when I was too hugely pregnant with Daphne to get on the ground and play cars like I used to, we could still dance...

And perhaps that is why he likes it - it has always been ours, regardless of Daphne. And perhaps that is why she likes it, she has been dancing with us all along.

Cooper will say "Do the dance that I am doing" and we will all follow suit (me by trying to emulate him, Daphne by walking around in circles)...

Daphne will start her "classic Daphne" move at the table, and we will all join in...

Until we cramp her style and she shakes us off to go solo again...

Steve sometimes joins in. Mostly he gives me a look that makes me think I understand why my mom saved this for when Dad was out of town.

That's ok though. Because no matter if I just got home from the gym and need a shower... The kids and I...

We will always have the dance.

Whattup Homies?

Daphne in the house...

I am a little more street than the rest of this house...

In fact, I am too fly for clothes...

Peace out.

Long Weekend

Cooper listens to lots of music, but he currently really enjoys the Beatles and Billy Joel. There is nothing better than listening to him over the monitor when it is bed time singing "Einstein, James Dean, Brooklyn's got a winning team..."

Cooper also writes his own songs.

They usually center around trains.

"Thomas is a blue tank engine, and he is a very useful engine, and you know that. And James is useful, too, and Gordon pulls the express, and you know that."

His songwriting is amazing. And you know that.

And he is quite amazing, too.

And then there is Daphne.

Yes, I do have a picture of her on top of a table. She climbed up in the 5-10 seconds it took me to compliment Cooper on a puzzle he had just completed. In the same room.

I didn't know she had a stealth mode. Usually things with her are so LOUD.

Then she tried to use her toys to climb on and leverage her on top of the radiator.

Steve was asleep when these pictures were taken. When I showed them to him, he just said "oh no."

Do You Look Like the Little Mermaid?

According to Cooper, I do.

God bless him, the poor kid needs glasses.

God Help Us

Apparently a certain young lady can now operate a zipper. This was the second time we caught her in a state of undress today. The first time was when we went to get her out of her crib first thing this morning and she was in nothing but a diaper and her jammies were on the floor.

How You Can Tell...

Sometimes I look at Daphne... already over a year old, and a walking, talking (often yelling) little beast of a person, and I think "How can this be? How can my baby already be a TODDLER???" I mean, I am not ready for that. I think I was able to consider Cooper a baby for far longer than he was actually a baby, because there was no toddler there for him to be compared to... and because he was always so sweet and docile, that the un-babylike squaking that Daphne does never happened with Coop, thus allowing me to stay in a tranquil baby-land trance even though, he too, turned one... and then two and so on and so forth.

However, despite seeming so... big and, well grown up... Daphne is not, in fact a big kid yet.

Here is how I know.

Tonight, once ready to go to bed, after my 1.5 glasses of wine (it is a Friday, after all), I start the rounds to "turn down the house" so to speak. I lock the back door, turn off the lights in the kitchen, and proceed to the front of the house, turning off, locking up, settling in as I go. And once I am ready to tuck myself in, in the bedroom at the very front of the house, having washed and brushed, I take the video monitor as a flashlight (because my cell phone is almost out of batteries, and I can't find a charger) and mute it, and then walk in to Cooper's room, tripping on a toy, but hardly pausing, hanging up the last few pieces of laundry that needed putting away, and then walking straight to where that sweet little boy lays splayed across the bed and placing my hand on his chest, letting it rise and fall with each breath. Only after two or three complete breaths will I remove my hand, then kiss my fingers, place them on his forehead and walk back out, inevitably tripping on something else.

Then I head to Daphne's room. Usually, I will go in, using the light from the monitor to guide my feet, making sure not to touch anything, walking near the walls to reduce the creakiness of the floors, and then I will flash the faint light in the crib only briefly so I know where to oh so very delicately lay my hand so as not to upset her, and as soon as I fell a single rise and fall of her chest, I will darken everything and then as quickly as possible while maintaining silence, I will back out of the room and spend 30 seconds shutting the door so as not to make noise withe the doorknob. Or, like tonight, I will open the door and hear a rustle, which is an indicator that I have been less than silent, and I will immediately shut the door as quietly as possible and then hold my breath outside the door for 30 seconds, thanking God that I hear nothing, because, while I have startled her, I have not awakened her.

Thus, she is still a baby.

That's how I can tell.

A kid sleeps like a log. But, not a baby, you never want to wake a baby.

I love my kid and my baby.

Aren't 3 Year Olds Grand

Me to Steve: What should we have for dinner tonight?

Cooper: The chicken.

Me to Cooper: What chicken?

Cooper: The brown chicken.

...

Me to Cooper: The spicy chicken?

Cooper: No

Me to Cooper: The not so spicy chicken you helped me make before?

Cooper: No, the brown chicken in the sauce

Steve to Me (acting all know-it-all-y) and Cooper: Oh, you mean the chicken strips you dip in the sauce?

Cooper: No

Me to Cooper (giving a you don't know-it-all look to Steve): Who makes the chicken, Mommy or Daddy?

Cooper: Mommy...

Cooper: or Daddy...

(Steve and me looking at each other confused...)

Steve to Cooper: Can you tell us more about this chicken? What does it taste like?

Cooper: It is chicken, and it is brown, and it is grand, and brown, and with rice, and grand

(Steve and me looking at each other and trying not to laugh)

********************

1) we finally figured out he meant orange chicken from the nearby Chinese restaurant (thus the confusion over who cooks it).

2) we still have NO idea where the word "grand" came from

********************

Right now, Cooper really hates it if you say you love him most. He wants to love ME most. Sometimes, he is ok if it is a tie. That kid has no idea. Unquantifiable.

*******************

Steve tells Cooper Thomas the Train stories almost every night. I love listening to them through the walls. Steve doing different voices, and Cooper squealing. According to Steve, he is requesting the same story every night now. And when Steve gets to the part where Sir Topham Hat comes in to set the engines straight, he will say, "and then comes..." and pause, and Coop, shaking with excitement, will say "Sir. Topham. Hat!!!!"

*****************

Things are pretty tame in our house when it comes to TV. First, the kids don't get to watch much (and, when the TV is on, it is often sports of some sort, which holds their attention for about .01 second (though, since Coop has become such a basketball stud, he will now watch basketball games and loudly cheer for teams and say NOW THE BULLS ARE ON DEFENSE / OFFENSE!!!)). Second, the TV they do watch has very little violence or "bad guys" so to speak. I mean, in Cars there is Chick Hicks, who is kind of a bully, and in Thomas there are the Diesels, but that is about as "bad" as we let it get. Nonetheless, I love the fact that Cooper is so hesitant to write off the so-called villains. Instead, he will acknowledge that they are bad guys, but then wants you to know that they are only "a little bit bad guys" and "we still like them, though." He is everyone's best friend that kid.

2012: A Pretty Great Year

ohmygosh... this is a hot mess, but I am busy and go back to work tomorrow and just don't have the time/energy/focus to proof/improve this. My apologies. But here is a wrap up of our 2012. On the whole, it was a pretty great year.

January: We started off this 2012 year in our own distinct way - disgusting and feverish. And continued the month with all sorts of similar symptoms. Somewhere in there Daphne smiled and cooed, and Cooper and I rocked the sledding hill (which has gotten NO action yet this year - HELLO CHICAGO - WHERE BE THE SNOW???). I was still figuring out this how this whole double the number of kids meant quadruple times some exponent the amount of work such amount minus infinity = the amount of sleep that I was getting, but we were all enjoying having one new and totaling four and learning that the littlest two were, in fact, not the same at all. Coop was, unlike Daph, part feline.

February: We continued the trend in February of living surrounded by poop. But what better way to spend one's time then not sleeping and surrounded by poop? I kid, it wasn't all that bad - there were moments of good. Like when COOPER TURNED THREE!!! What? I have a three year old? yeah, for like one more minute. I gotta say - two was awesome. Nothing terrible about it, on the whole (I would be lying if I said there were not "moments"), but three is pretty great, too, though a bit more sassy. At three Coop turned into more of a person, less of a baby. Suddenly we had conversations, and most of them started to even make sense. But I am getting ahead of myself. Cooper turned three and it was amazing and he is a big boy and a great big brother.

March: We began to venture back out into the world in March (I think we felt we had done our part sheltering the masses from Daph for three months, and it was someone else's turn). Then we went bat-shit-crazy and took a "vacation" which was really only genuinely personally enjoyable for Coop, but was amazing vicariously for everyone else. We played soccer and visited the fish zoo, and had a good old time in my last month of maternity leave. Daphne thought it would be fun to pretend like she would start sleeping in long stretches, and then promptly regressed to the sleep habits of a newborn.

April: And then it came to a head. The newborn sleep habit and my return to work led to some serious "tough love" which actually went way better than expected (we all came out alive) and FINALLY we got some sleep in this house. Amen. Yes, there was Easter, there was girl time, there were leg warmers and there was a slobbery smile, but, for me, this was a month that had SLEEP.

May: Cooper started swim lessons and Daphne really came into her own and laid down the law / put us on notice - this house is HERS now and she will own us all. This was a bad month for me. A really bad month. I have pictures here to document that my kids were around doing things this month, but heck, I don't remember them, because most of these pictures were pictures that my dear hubby took and then sent me, because I was MIA for a good chunk of their (and most normal people's) waking hours. Serenity now. Serenity then.

June: The crazy continued into this month, but I managed some time to hang with my terrors. Daphne began showing us what mobility looked like on her, and Coop continued to be a sweet little buddy, who still wants to be my constant companion. I wondered what the future will hold for Daph as my daughter, but I wonder all the time what our future will hold - will Coop always be my buddy? Will Daphne always know just the pitch to scream at to drive me batty but make me give in? Or will they switch it up. I hope they stay exactly the same forever, which means always changing every day, because each time I think they are perfect, they become something else, that is in fact, just a little bit better.

July: We had company in July, including a birthday Mamaw, which was wonderful. I finally found a middle ground, and was able to rejoin the world of the family. And, to fill in for all the time I used to have, but no longer can find, I posted pictures of the beautifuls because, isn't that really all anyone wants to see anyhow? Isn't the picture enough to remember the time? Let's hope so... Oh, and we almost moved to Decatur. That was crazy. I had a one day/night road trip with Cooper to our prospective new locale, and though it was not the right place for us, I will never forget that trip. I chose to take him. I chose, rather than leaving Cooper home with his dad and sister, and taking some "me" time and cruising 3 hours to check out some places, I chose to take him with me. The truth of the matter is, yes, there was some extra work (extra stops, lots of strapping in and out of the car, etc), but I prefer having his company to being alone. I love that kid.

August: This is the last month I look and see a younger Cooper. Now he looks so much OLDER than he does in these photos. And Daphne, this is the first month she starts looking to me like she looks now. This month must have been some weird age / time vortex I guess. Either that, or haircuts make a HUGE difference, and Daphne, well, she is just a mess. She started pulling herself to standing and I think we all knew it was the beginning of the end. We took cover at the movies.

September: This was a big month, a HUGE month for Sir Cooperton. He started preschool and HATED it immediately. And, what a victory, I was there to witness it. Fortunately, with a little time (2-3 drop offs) he came to LOVE school and all things school related. It is so weird handing over my child (figuratively, since Steve does the drop off) to another person 3 mornings a week. I can't see what he learns while he is there, but he brings it home - randomly pronouncing "5 plus 3 makes 8!" Proud of that kid, I am. And so happy he gets a few hours a few days a week away from his (terror of a) little sister. It started getting chilly and thus, the dinosaur was born. "Rowr!"

October: This was a BUSY month... baseball (watching and playing), basketball (playing?), ditching the kids and going to Vegas, making and wearing AMAZING (but not so durable) costumes. Oh, and pink eye. Eww, I don't even like remembering it.

November: A celebratory month! Thank you for America, and THANK YOU TIMES A MILLION FOR DAPHNE! (and thank you times a million and one that we all made it to this milestone). Pictures were scarce, but many memories were made. Family from both sides got together and my favorite season of the year was begun. Oh, and I turned 30. When do I start FEELING 30?

December: As the year wrapped up, Daph stepped up her game. Literally. She now terrorizes us with lots of steps and when she really wants to get trucking, she will grab a hand (or any available leverage), stare down at the floor directly in front of her, and then start churning the legs as fast as she can - the upper body barely able to keep up. I never know when I watch her how she doesn't fall more often. But she looks great in a swimsuit. Cooper was at the BEST AGE EVER (Yet?) to experience Christmas, and new family traditions were begun, including driving looking at Christmas lights, eating cookies and drinking hot cocoa.
